(Additional Writing Requirement, see below)
A lifelong learner and educator of many students in Clatsop County, including 10 years in the Seaside School District, Patrick was a staunch supporter of equal access to education. His work with the Seaside School District was in 4th grade, the Talented and Gifted Program (when there was still an individual program) and 3rd grade in Cannon Beach. He retired from Clatsop Community College as a guidance counselor working with middle school students in the Educational Talent Search Program. He also spent a few summers working with high school students in the Upward Bound Program. His motto was “Readers are Leaders” and he fostered the love of learning in all students. Retiring in the community he served, Patrick was delighted whenever his path crossed with former students and he went out of his way to keep in touch. When he passed away in February 2021, his family wanted to honor his memory with scholarships to students who are the first in their families to attend institutes of higher learning, whether it be a two or four year college or technical/vocational school.
